One Day – A Quick Trip
If you only have a single day in London then you need to make the most of it, so start with a breakfast of champions at the Hawksmoor Guildhall, where the full English is considered one of the best in the city. Here, you are just a short walk from St Paul’s Cathedral, where you can head up to the Whispering Gallery and test the acoustics or explore the creepy crypt. When you’ve finished, walk south and cross the Thames over the famous Millennium Bridge and then stroll east along the river bank until you come to London Bridge. Here you can sign up for the London Bridge Experience and Tombs and discover the darker, more gruesome side of London’s history. Cross back over London Bridge and walk to The Monument, designed by Sir Christopher Wren to commemorate the Great Fire of London, and enjoy one of the most spectacular of London views from the platform at the top.
Walk up King William Street to Bank and take a central line train west into Oxford Circus and the heart of the West End. Walk south and east and lunch in a Soho institution such as Kettners and then make for Oxford Street and enjoy a spot of shopping. From here, you can walk right to the western end of Oxford Street and explore Hyde Park, or peel off left at New Bond Street for the Handle House Museum or right up Duke Street for the Wallace Collection. If you’re hungry then you’re in exactly the right spot for afternoon tea at nearby Claridges or enjoy some delicately blended cocktails in the hotel’s Fumoir, before heading into the West End to finish off your trip with a night at the theatre or a noisy club.
